Nutritional Standards
Recent legislation from DENI on Nutritional Standards for School Meals indicates that schools should actively encourage healthy eating. A Healthy Break Policy, ratified by the Board of Governors has been adopted.
Healthy Break Policy
At The Diamond Primary School we want to encourage healthy eating among staff and pupils. We have consulted with health professionals in the development of this policy and the Board of Governors is committed to it.
As part of our Healthy Break Policy children are encouraged to:
¨ only eat fruit or dried fruit, vegetables, bread based products at break time.
¨ drink only milk or water at break time.
As part of our Healthy Break Policy staff will:
¨ eat only fresh or dried fruit, vegetables, bread based products at break time.
¨ drink only milk, water, tea or coffee at break time.
As part of our Healthy Break Policy we hope that parents/those with parental responsibility will:
¨ encourage children to bring break based on the above guidelines.
Any child on a special diet for health reasons should adhere to the diet advised by the dietician.
Milk is available from school, ordered and paid for on a termly basis.
Water is available all day. Your child should bring an empty water bottle to school every day.
The healthy eating message will be reinforced throughout the child’s school day through curricular topics.
The school will monitor this policy regularly.
Milk
Subsidised milk costs £1.00 per week approx for 1/3 pint carton and is paid termly. Milk ordered must be paid for.
School Meals
School meals cost £2.60 per day at present. In cold weather particularly, a hot two course meal is beneficial to the children. A weekly menu is available.
Packed Lunches
If you prefer your child to bring a packed lunch, arrangements are made for these to be eaten in the classroom. It is safer if drinks are not brought in glass containers.
Money
It would be appreciated if the correct monies could be sent for dinners, milk, etc. as change is obviously not always available in school.
Water Bottles
Water Bottles are placed on the children’s desks in the morning for them to sip during the day.
Much research under the heading ‘Water and Effective Learning’ has been carried our and the findings include the following:-
¨ If a child becomes dehydrated he/she cannot learn.
¨ If a child is thirsty mental performance deteriorates 10%.
¨ Sipping water during the day improves mental performance.
Such outcomes encouraged us to implement this practice in our school. We ask you to provide your child/children with their own named water bottle, which is filled each morning in school. Children may still bring their own drinks for break or lunchtime.
DRINKING WATER FOR EFFECTIVE LEARNING
¨ Children will have their own named water bottle. We would ask you to ensure that it has a ‘sports top’, NOT a screw top.
¨ Each afternoon, bottles will be taken home to be washed out. It is very important that this is done to keep them free from germs.
¨ Children will bring their full bottles to school each morning.
¨ We would encourage you to remind your child to bring their bottle each day.
¨ This becomes an unobtrusive part of classroom practice and is very beneficial.
Your support with this initiative is very important to us.
